Prepare yourself for the cuteness that you’re about to witness! The dogs took over FIESTA yesterday morning at El Rey Fido’s Coronation, an annual fundraiser for the San Antonio Humane Society. Despite rain in the forecast, the popular event went on as planned at the Grand Hyatt San Antonio.
The honor of El Rey Fido XIV went to Scout Buddy Guy, a 10-year-old Labrador Retriever mix. Scout’s motto is “Rescue the mistreated, save the injured, love the abandoned.” He was awarded the title by El Rey Feo himself, Darren Casey, LXVIII! (For those of you who aren’t well-versed in Fiesta lingo, the second king to reign over Fiesta is El Rey Feo, the “Ugly King.” He raises money that’s given to students for their college expenses. He also visits hospitals, schools and nursing homes as well as making his appearance at Fiesta events).
Scout was also joined in celebration on stage by last year’s winner Ruby.
Scout’s Royal Court consists of Princess of the Food Bowl Sheila, a 3-year-old Chinese Shar-Pei/Pit Bull Terrier mix;
Duchess of the Chew Toy Snow White, a 6-year-old Shetland Sheepdog who has quite the story. She has had a hole in her heart since birth and was treated at Texas A&M;
Duchess of the Fire Hydrant Abby, a 1 1/2-year-old Chihuahua/Dachshund mix;
and Knight of the Royal Court Braille, a 6-year-old Dalmatian mix who is blind and deaf.
These furry guys, and their owners, fundraised over $35,000 for the pets at the San Antonio Humane Society! They had friends and fans there cheering them on, as well as a performance by Danzavida De San Antonio Dance Company.
Don’t worry if you weren’t able to make it out to El Rey Fido. These dogs will be part of Monday night’s Texas Cavalier’s River Parade and will walk in the Fiesta Pooch Parade Saturday, April 23rd.
