MY 5 FAVORITE PRODUCTS/BEAUTY TOOLS

IMG_8002

I posted a link to Facebook recently about my favorite hair brush that I think everyone should own. It got a lot of attention which made me start thinking. What are some beauty items and products that I use that I just can’t live without? I came up with these 5!

THE WET BRUSH

Several years ago my hairstylist, Lisa with Twirl Salon, recommended the Wet Brush to me. I had complained about tangles, knots and had a specific problem spot, and she raved about this product. At the time I thought I could only purchase it at the salon. I had a mini meltdown when I thought I lost mine after a trip last year! Come to find out, it’s very easy to purchase the brush, and it’s inexpensive too. You can find this detangling hairbrush with soft, flexible bristles, for $8.99 at Target and Amazon. Groupon is even running a deal right now, $7.99 for one brush, or $12.99 for two. And all of my mom friends agree. This is the ONLY brush that they use on their children’s sensitive hair and scalp. Most of us that own it have more than one and keep it at home, in our handbag, and at work.

Suggestion: If you are looking for a salon quality, higher end version of the Wet Brush, I recommend Leyla Milani Hair’s Miracle Brush. I bought this during a Black Friday sale this year and just love it! It is a natural boar/nylon bristle paddle brush and styles all hair types. It is also recommended for children! You can find the brush for $22.99 here.

NOT YOUR MOTHER’S BEACH BABE TEXTURIZING SEA SALT SPRAY

This sea salt spray was a game changer for me! I’ve always wanted the beachy wave look but could never find the right product. My natural hair is actually a pretty wavy style that was just dying for a product to do the work. One day while browsing the beauty aisle at Target I found this spray. For $5 (you heard right, $5!) I figured it was worth a shot! The first time I used it I fell in love. The spray is light, not sticky, and doesn’t make the hair crunchy. Oh, and it smells good! I let my hair airdry (in hot Texas it doesn’t take very long) and that’s it! Absolutely no heat treatment or styling necessary. I did this all summer long and received tons of compliments. To buy, click here.

Suggestion: Combine this spray with the other fabulous products in the “Not Your Mother’s” line. I have tried the shampoo and texturizing hair cream also. For a pricier version, Bumble & Bumble’s surf spray is also good, but did leave my hair feeling quite crunchy and didn’t dry as quick.

JOHN FRIEDA FRIZZ EASE AND GARNIER FRUCTIS SLEEK & SHINE ANTI-FRIZZ SERUM

Almost every time I see Lisa for my hair appointment she compliments me on my shiny hair. The products I use are inexpensive and have been tried and true for years. The first, John Frieda’s Frizz Ease ($8), I use when my hair is wet and towel dried. Just 1 pump is all it takes. After blowdrying my hair I apply Garnier Fructis anti-frizz serum ($5). You can buy both at Target.

Suggestion: If you want to splurge on the absolute BEST product for healthy shiny hair, here’s my suggestion. Try Olaplex. It multiplies bonds in your hair making hair stronger, healthier and more vibrant than ever. This product is applied on the hair at the salon and left in for awhile (I usually leave with it in my wet hair and keep it on for the day). The treatment at Twirl costs $45.

THE TRIPLE THREAT INTERCHANGEABLE CERAMIC CURLING IRON

Speaking of Leyla Milani Hair above, can I just say I’ve found my dream curling iron? My hair is very thin, but I have a lot of it. Most of the time any curl just falls flat, which is why I have worn it straight for so many years. I was searching for ways to change up my look when I found this clipless ceramic curling iron. It is simply amazing! Very easy to use, with three interchangeable ceramic barrels in different sizes (0.75 inch, 1 inch, and 1.25 inch). If you check out the website you will see this product has received 107 reviews with ALL but 3 FIVE STAR REVIEWS! It’s $179.99 but if you follow Leyla Milani on Instagram or online you will see deals that she posts. I have never paid full price for any of her items.

Suggestion: Add on her “Big Hair Don’t Care Volume Boosting Powder” to your order. For $22.99 this magic powder lifts and adds major volume to any hair type. Just sprinkle it on the areas you want volume and Voila! These two products have amped up my going out hairstyle quite a bit. Also, check out Leyla’s tutorials on her website. This beauty really knows what she’s talking about!

CLARISONIC MIA 1

This product single handedly changed my complexion. Before the Clarisonic Mia I was prone to acne. I never had any scarring but I would get deep, cystic flareups that hurt a lot. I bought the brush and the Deep Pore Cleansing brush head and started using it consistently. Not everyday, but several times a week. I was amazed at how my skin cleared up. I could go out without foundation on for the first time in my life! I think I’ve only had one cystic pimple since I started using it. The brush comes with a cleanser but I use it with my own favorite (Bobbi Brown lathering tube soap). It cleans six time better than hands alone and is one speed. The Mia 1 is $99 and can be bought here. You can also buy the 2-speed version for $149 here.

Suggestion: Last week I had a facial in Miami. The esthetician looked closely at my skin and recommended that I switch back to a Sensitive brush head on the Clarisonic. That was a good tip since I never would have switched it back had she not said that. My skin does not need the deep pore cleansing anymore. Also, be careful about the amount you exfoliate while also using the Clarisonic. I try to exfoliate only once a week.

BONUS!!

In an upcoming blog post I’m going to give helpful hints on how to clean your sterling silver, diamond and gemstone jewelry. But I wanted to let you in first on my favorite product to keep my wedding ring set super sparkly all the time. I use Tiffany & Co. liquid jewelry cleaner. It comes with a basket and brush and I leave my ring soaking in the solution for a while. After a quick once over with the brush I rinse my rings with water and blow-dry them with my hairdryer (so no water spots are left). Quick and easy! The product is sold in store and here for $20.

I remember how much you loved your Clarisonic years ago and I am so glad I listened to you. I love mine just as much! I used to suffer from dry patches during the winter but not any longer. This little machine buffs it away without stripping my sensitive skin!

Oh and looking forward to the jewelry cleaning post! 😉

I bought my Wet Brush hairbrush at Ulta yesterday and I LOVE it! Because I color my hair it can get tangled pretty bad when it is wet. It is so mush less painful with this brush! Thank you Carly!
