I always hear people ask “What’s a good book to read?” Even though I love to read, I often don’t have an answer right on the spot. Well, now I do. For Christmas my mom gave me the book “Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear” by Elizabeth Gilbert. You know, the author that rose to fame after writing Eat, Pray, Love. My mom’s friend, the mother of a former classmate of mine, thought I would enjoy it.
Let me just tell you this book couldn’t have come at a better time! Most of you know I recently left Corporate America. The plan was to take 3 months off and then start working at the security business my husband and I own. A blog was never really the end goal. But for months, even before I left my job, I was having unexplainable strong feelings that I was meant to do something creative. That I was supposed to put my Journalism degree back to use. I honestly don’t think I really made a conscious decision to start this blog, I just started writing and thinking. Ideas were (and still are) pouring out of me. It’s like I’m alive again!
And that’s kind of the basis of the book. Gilbert set out to write her perspective on creativity and insights into the mysterious nature of inspiration.
Here are two of my favorite quotes from the book:
“A creative life is an amplified life. It’s a bigger life, a happier life, an expanded life, and a hell of a lot more interesting life. Living in this manner-continually and stubbornly bringing forth the jewels that are hidden within you-is a fine art, in and of itself”
“Do whatever brings you to life, then. Follow your own fascinations, obsessions, and compulsions. Trust them. Create whatever causes a revolution in your heart. The rest will take care of itself.”
I highly encourage you to pick this book up, whether you feel like you are creative or not. I’m sure it will stir something in you the way it has done with me.
